Music selection should be based on familiarity, repetitive, simple text, inspirational songs, abilities of the participants, participants' preferences, and the combination of choir director and member choices (Velmer, 2014).

Top Tips for Printing Song Lyrics:

  • -Print large font, at least 14 point
  • -Try to keep lyrics one song to a page
  • -Use bold on repetitive text/chorus
  • -Color code songs/themes
  • -Keep in a three-ring binder
  • -If available, project on screen

Music Selection: 

  • -Select a theme or mix it up
  • -Listen to YouTube for ideas
  • -Read lyrics ahead of time
  • -Select a variety of fast and slow songs
  • -Try "challenge" songs to build confidence
  • -Songs may need to be slowed down when first introduced
  • -Ask for member input!
